Was ice dancer Charlie White thinking about the gold medal when he was out on the ice in Sochi? No, he told an interviewer, all he focuses on is putting in a performance he can be proud of.

So why are you worrying about getting a publisher while you’re writing your book? Or worrying about the salary while you’re interviewing for a job? Or worrying about how you’re going to be received when you give your big presentation?

Take a page from the Olympic gold-medalist’s playbook: commit to the process, and detach from the outcome.
